2008: Movies and Songs

January 13, 2009

This is the year I have seen many films and I am quite often to theatres. I have watched only one English film in theatre this year. And it is Dark Knight. Except for that, other films I have watched are Tamil. So here is my personal list of films which I consider as best:

Anjathe: Released last February, this film is a tale of two friends, whose paths were interchanged due to some unexpected happenings. And with one becomes vulnerable, he becomes a soft target for the villain and kidnappings form the other part of the story. What went well for this film is its realistic approach. Kudos to the director Mysskin. The song Kathala Kannala has become a cult hit and grown over the audiences.

Santhosh Subramaniam: This film is a remake of the Telugu film ‘Bommarilu’ which I enjoyed to the core. The story of this film is about a father who is willing to give the best to his son without knowing what he really likes. So with his son falls in love after engagement with another girl, his father asks him to prove that the girl was suitable for their family. Its funny, thought provoking and while watching the film I was just jumping out of the seat and laughing.

Dasavatharam: Whatever one can say about this film, but he/she can’t deny that this film has made the world to turn and see the Indian cinema. Nobody has done 10 characters in a single film and Kamalhaasan has done this, but not in a perfect style. I can’t love Kamal in all 10 roles. If he had done only 4 or 5 roles, this would have been little more better film. He has also written a wonderful story for this around Chaos theory. The biggest letdown of this film is Technical aspects.

Subramaniyapuram: This film was released during July. It is directed by the debutant director Sasikumar. The story of the film is about 4 friends in village who does a murder for the politician whom they know and how their life changes after that. It also has a beautiful love story in it. This film has shown betrayal, friendship, love and revenge in a realistic manner. ‘Kandal Irandal’ song has become a hit among the audiences which helped this film in a big way.

Saroja: This is one of the films which I loved to core. It has the right proportion of thrill and humour. And the theme of this film is different to Tamil cinema. The action of this film takes place in a day. It is directed by Venkat Prabhu, who has already given a hit with Chennai – 600028.

Bommalattam: After a very long time I have watched an intelligent thriller from the veteran director Bharathiraja. Its tightly scripted and if some logical flaws has been removed means, this would have become a even more better film. Nonetheless this is a film worth the watch.

Songs:

I have heard most of Tamil songs and some Hindi songs. Here is the list of songs I enjoyed:

Anbe Enanbe and Sakiye from Dhaam Dhoom.

Kabhi Kabhi Aditi from Jaane tu ya Jaane na.

Nenjikkul peidhidum, Annul maele and Ava enna from Vaaranam Aayiram.

Kangal Irandal from Subramaniyapuram.

Thozhiya from Kaadhalil Vizhunden.

Cheeky Cheeky from Saroja.

Machan Machan from Silambattam.

Taxi Taxi from Sakkarakati.

Guzarish from Ghajini.

Haule Haule from Rab ne bana di jodi.

So that’s it friends. Yet to catch the first movie this year in theatre. I will post about them once I see the films. I have booked the ticket for Padikathavan for this pongal. I hope it will be good.

The biggest let down about Dasavathaaram was the makeup – it was very amateurish at best. I wanted to watch Saroja but didn’t 😦

kanagu: I agree with you but still ther are some chracters like Balram Naidu and Poovaragan I liked very much. Saroja.. watch it.. it will worth your time 🙂

Kangal Irandal from Subramaniyapuram – this sure is a gr8 song! and yeah loved santosh subramanian as well..i guess it was the genelia magic working out ;P and everything about dasavatharam was a thumbs down ;(

kanagu: I think the screenplay of Dasavadharam is good as Kamal took one of the complex scientific theory.. and Genelia.. she is spontaneous as Hasini 🙂
