Why is it so?

February 18, 2009

I have observed this strange thing, that whenever we open a newspaper, or read anything we could see the bad things outnumbers the good things. Even in my blog, there are more posts on what was going wrong than right. If it was true means, we were living in a hell. But I don’t think that situation has gone that worse. Was the more bad news  means nothing going right in this world? Or are we celebrating the bad things than the right ones? Or are we pointing out the mistakes to correct them? Or is it a human nature to take notice of the bad things more easily?

In the past 6 months if we take the newspaper means most of the headlines are about 26/11 terrorist attack, fall of Satyam, economic recession, Obama’s victory and some other. Other things just faded from my memory. Even the newspapers which celebrated the Obama’s Victory were not publishing the news of how Obama plans to tackle the recession in the front page. It was being published in the world news. Compare the Obama’s victory with the terrorist attacks. After the 26/11 terrorist attacks, it has been the front page news for more than 10 days. But Obama has got the first page when he has won the elections and when he has take over the presidency from George Bush Jr. Even the state elections which are happened during the same period(terrorist attacks) were not got the same coverage. Then every news like India’s investigation, giving the dossier to Pakistan and now Pakistan’s reply relating to the 26/11 attacks has hit the headlines. As per the newspapers, they say that they will provide the news in which the public were more interested, which subsequently improve the circulation of the paper. So, were people like to read about tragedies than nice things?

Above, I have said about the English newspapers. If we come to regional newspapers (I am going to write about this with regard to Tamil), it will be full of murders, rape and kidnaps. Even the world news, it will be mostly filled up with the war in Israel – Palestine, Srilanka… Then take the business column, it will give importance to job cuts and not the increase hiring rates, losses than the profits. Was that the only things happening around the world? Even if the take the films, the one with the dark themes were getting the praise from the critics. Was that means that the peoples hearts are made of stone? Or are they never want to know the good things?

When I try to search about the best practices being followed in elections by various countries, I am not able to get the desired pages. But if search for Guantanamo bay jail or whale killings there are abundant information in the first  page itself. Is there is any kind of shortage for goodness in this world now? Even if we see, we are talking about how good is the past years of our life or our country or our world. But when it comes to present means, we are saying like, everything is bad. Even at times we don’t have a bright idea about future. Even after 5 years we will say how good 2009 is.. forgetting about the economic recession, terrorist attacks, pink slips and we will remeber only the good things. That is the human nature. It keeps on talk about the present worries and compares it with the goods of the past. If it is so, why don’t we enjoy those now. Why wait for 5 years to pass on?It’s my observation.

Then again, if you are expecting only something that are going good in my blog from now, I have only one thing to say, “I AM A HUMAN. AND I WILL KEEP WORRYING ABOUT THE PRESENT”. After all, I have to prove my observation, right????????? 😀 :D. Kidding yaar……….

PS: I have decided to post some good things which are happening around us, which may inspire us to be happy and bury our worries 🙂

you are right dude, media thinks that it can sell more if they have bad news and sensation news…. 🙂

That is why I am a staunch follower of the Hindu!!! my fav paper… which gives us just news and not sensational news!!
and write about good thoughts dude…. would love to read em!!

kanagu: Even Hindu has its own faults Ajit!!!
    I will post them… now collecting 🙂

Media just gives what people expect. Or, what they think people expect. Sometimes since certain cases are sensationalized by the media, the high profile culprits cannot just escape.Which they would have done otherwise. Secondly, people have this strange satisfaction in knowing that something worser is going on in some other part of this world!

    Destination Infinity

    kanagu:
/*people have this strange satisfaction in knowing that something worser is going on in some other part of this world*/
    Thats interesting 🙂
And media at times going overboard 😦

I dont think theres anything wrong in bringing out the negatives; either thorugh the media or through your blog. You are just making people aware of whats happening. Its not your fault that most of the happenings in the world are depressing these days 😀

kanagu: What I wanted to convey is, there is good things which are not getting enough attention or appreciation from us. Wrong things are meant to look at our faults and clearing it… is that happening here 😕

A boy securing 1st rank is not a news. A boy who studied under a lamppost, working 2-3 shifts with ailing parents securing 1st makes news 🙂

    Media sells what people like.

kanagu: Thats what, I want this media’s to publish.. that will inspire many… not the elaborate description how someone was killed or how they have theft something
    /*Media sells what people like.*/
    Bang on 🙂

Life consists of ups and downs. We are in a ‘down’ period. What we need to do now is to bear with all the bad events so that when the ‘up’ period comes, we can enjoy it more fully.

kanagu: Leafless, I am not saying these last 6 months.. I have been reading papers for past 10 years.. and this case for all seasons.. now we are down.. I accept but these newspapers will get all kind of bad things in any kind of good time 🙂

  9. February 19, 2009 11:43 am

Have read somewhere that Israeli newspapers dont carry the enws of suicide/terrorist attacks in front page. Not sure if they publish good news in the front page OR if they have a speprate section for terror attacks :).

All we can say is bad things need coverage so that they dont get repeated, good things better be unadvertised

kanagu: If good things never come out means how the people will know they are living in aworld and not in hell 😛
That Israel news is interesting.. I will check out 🙂

I had a blog named “smiley news”… and i shut it off in a few months as it was very difficult for me to actually find the news which would put a smile on our faces!! 😦

Hope you can find more things to write which are happy in nature! 🙂

    kanagu: Thanks Sakhi!!
I will post them soon.. but its quite a tedious process 🙂

    so sad on media!!

    kanagu: Welcome here, Madhuri 🙂
    Media 😦

The devil is in ur mind. If I were to say only all good things abt the world, it would make you feel good about the world, which in reality, isn’t all that good. But tell people about the bad, and they will fear the bad. They’ll make themselves vulnerable to their individual consciences and will refrain from resorting to social evil.

on the other hand, more the evil in the world, more the encouragement got by anti-social elements. They will know what Fear can do to people and they’ll wish to play with it further.

bottomline : Nothing really is in your hands. live in whatever peace u are left with. 🙂

kanagu:/*The devil is in ur mind.*/
oh.. lemme check my mind 🙂
Fear and greed…. if this 2 things are not present in this world means we can say we are in heaven 🙂

  14. February 19, 2009 6:23 pm

    What an interesting observation..!:)
to some extent you are right of course..the bad news outweighs the good news atleast for the media…
but as Solilo says so rightly..the media will show that which sells…and what an interesting example Solilo:D

but Kanagu..I am sure if we keep searching for good news we will find it..:)waiting to see the good things in your next posts..:D

    kanagu: Welcome here, Indyeah 🙂
The proportion is always high towards the bad things in Media…. Maybe I can get the right mix in my blog 🙂
    Thank you 🙂

    Kanagu !!

most media factories come out from the Devil’s workshop…to instill negative thoughts thereby discouraging good men to act…

here’s a link ST had sent during the terror attacks: http://goodnewsindia.com/index.php/gni

kanagu: Yes Vinnie… they are rarely publishing the good news.. I know many good things were happening in this world.. Thanks for the link.. I will check it soon 🙂

  16. February 20, 2009 12:13 pm

Kanagu, the media do have to keep reporting stuff as it happens, not that they do it though 😦

Anyway the positive things do get covered. Only, if presented with both together, it’s natural to notice the negative things more. Dark movies don’t necessarily win all the praise. Comedies do equally well.
The launch of the new exclusively comedy channels in Tamil is a good move, what do you think 😛

kanagu: I accept it.. comedies do well…
For the channels I think we don’t have enough footage of comedies to run a 24-hr channel 😦
And in that also some craps being shown instead of legendary NSK, thangabalu or Nagesh’s comedies 😦

  17. February 20, 2009 2:56 pm

That’s life dude..! I mean… Of late… Helluva lotta worries are eclipsing the more pleasanter stuff. Guess that’s a Divine way of saying – look at the brighter side, however small it is! Ah well…

    Peace. Be well.

kanagu: Thats a good quote Kartz 🙂 nice one 🙂
