Good one series – Nehru’s speech

May 27, 2009

Hi friends, I have came across this editorial in the tamil daily Dinamani few days before(on the election day, May 13). Its really thought provoking and wonderful. So I am sharing it with you all. The content goes as follows:

After India declared itself as a Republic, in the first elections held on the year 1952. Our then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was campaigning for congress party.

Today’s Madhya Pradesh was then called as ‘Vindhya Pradesh’. In there is an assembly seat called ‘Reva’. For that seat, Reva kingdom’s King Rao Shivbhadur Singh has contested on behalf of congress party.

The details said about Reva’s king by a freedom fighter who resided with Nehru in the prison, while going to campaign in the Reva assembly seat made Nehru worried. A mass gathering was organized in Reva to introduce the canditates by Nehru. He hurriedly went to the stage and started to speak:

“On the part of Congress party, we have announced the candidates for assembly and parliamentary seats. If India’s freedom, unity, democracy needs to be safeguarded, it’s important that Congress party must form the government. At the same time, if you think that each and every candidate was selected and made to stand by Nehru, then its wrong and it is not possible also. We are just accepting the candidates who are referred by the state and district committees. So don’t think that everybody made to stand by the congress party were uncorrupted or highly qualified.

For me congress party is important. I believe that it can only safeguard this nation in a united and free manner. But for me, democracy is more important than congress. If democracy prevails in this country only, the freedom and unity will be safeguarded. For India’s democracy to be safeguarded you must elect the good candidates as your representatives. Murderers, people with criminal backgrounds, anti-social elements, those who use their position for their good, those who give troubles to harijans, those who are communally motivated, if they belong to congress party also, please don’t elect them. Due to those candidates, democracy will fumble and our freedom will become meaningless.

On coming here, I came across news that there is many criminal cases on the Reva King Rao Shiv Bhadur Singh who is contesting as congress candidate. There was a case on him that when he was in the government of Vindhya Pradesh, he along with his deputy has helped the Panna diamond mine by creating fake documents and for that he has got Rs.25000 as bribe. If you think that he is Jawaharlal Nehru’s candidate then that is the cheat you are doing to the democracy. Don’t vote for any candidates just because you like congress or socialist party. Even though Rao Rao Shiv Bhadur Singh is congress candidate, he is a wrong candidate. You must defeat him and safeguard the democracy!”

saying that he started to get down from stage very fast.

So friends, do you think that any present political leader has the guts to say that the candidate chosen by them was a wrong one and defeat him/her. This kind of things always make me wonder of how great the leaders of our nation in the past, who only thinks about the country.

I didn’t know about this…If its true, Nehru showed guts and yes, people should vote for the candidate and not for the party…

    • May 31, 2009 2:25 pm

Yes Bones… they must choose the right candidate else its a lose for them for 5 years

  3. May 27, 2009 11:48 am

yes as they have said above… interesting !!

never knew this side of nehru !

  4. May 28, 2009 4:19 am

I think we are now very much aware as a nation than say, 30 years back.
Also, that was a completely different era. Now there is no external threat so all we can think of is making money. The story you have shared is definitely not possible in today’s scenario.

  5. May 28, 2009 8:14 am

Never heard of it and if it is true then Kudos to leaders of that era. Even Presidents then were so prominent. Now all of them are mere stamps.

    • May 28, 2009 3:00 pm

Yes, Solilo, the office of the President has become a mere stamp! I find it so sad that someone like Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was not given a second chance. All because he was not a ‘stamp’!

Never read/heard abt this article kanagu.

Congress ministers had a very bad name in andhra but it is the congress who got the majority of votes,it means people voted for the party not the people. Most of the sitting ministers lost their seats. All important ministers lost their seats to either TDP or RJR

      • May 28, 2009 5:26 pm

That was really sad smitha,he was not elected again, just because he doesn’t behave the way they want him to 😦

I even heard that he was not given a proper house after leaving Rashtrapathi bhavan 😦

      • May 30, 2009 5:43 pm

        I agree Smitha !

        • May 31, 2009 6:12 pm

Here the way our political parties are selecting a president is a questionable one… and the laws are also didn’t given much power to them like if a law was sent to him for approval he can reject it for only one time after that he has to approve whether it is corrected or not.

If any rule has to be implemented means it must be passed thru parliament… and our members are not brave enough to give more powers to President… 😐

I had never heard about this either! But if true, my respect for Nehru has risen by a LOT! This should be the attitude.. Wonder how it has reached the stage it has now.. From what I have read, Nehru was a person with his heart in the right place… He really cared about India, about maintaining democracy.. It all changed with his daughter Indira Gandhi.. Then started the downhill phase …

Its great how you find these gems of wisdom!

    • May 31, 2009 6:15 pm

I already have great respect for the leaders who fought for our freedom… and these kind of incidents never surprises me… as they always seen their nation before anything 🙂

yes Indira gandhi changed everthing in this country… she may be a good PM, but made many terrible mistakes.. for which we are reaping now 😦

Never read/heard abt this article kanagu.

Congress ministers had a very bad name in andhra but it is the congress who got the majority of votes,it means people voted for the party not the people. Most of the sitting ministers lost their seats. All big ministers lost their seats to either TDP or RJR 😦

    • May 28, 2009 5:22 pm

      oh PJR

    • May 31, 2009 6:18 pm

It is also because of the populist schemes announced by the congress party…
parties tend to use the poverty and desire of the people to their own good and keeping them as
      poor forever 😦
they should have lost… but people thought otherwise

  8. May 28, 2009 11:14 pm

if Nehru actually did that, then God bless him 🙂

really??? tough to digest! tho my political knowledge (or lack of it) is not something i can boast about, but if he truly did that, then it definitely is an act in favour of the country more than anything!

kanagu, i cannot even imagine such a thing happeing today 😐 if it does, then practically half of every party will be gone, coz we don’t have a strict rule against criminals in politics…

    • May 31, 2009 6:26 pm

Yup… we can’t expect this from our present political parties…
its a favour for nation and he is true leader who admits the mistake

  10. May 30, 2009 10:44 am

Nehru… ah… its better i don’t go on, o him! But a good post from you, thats for sure 🙂

  11. May 30, 2009 5:51 pm

Thats an interesting article Kanagu 🙂
Thanks for sharing..I had no clue about this..

One of the important reasons why the Congress has been respected so much as a party in India is because it was one of the major political parties in India at the time of independence..its leaders had played a huge role in the freedom struggle..

SO I think that the initial respect accorded to the Congress was justified and for a long time the Congress did work for it as well

The problem arises only when any party/individual/institution starts taking its place for granted…

that should never be allowed to happen..

i think that if this incident is true then Nehru Ji definitely was honest to a fault..

The only question is that if he was such an influential leader(He came for this candidate’s speech after all) then why couldn’t he cancel the ticket or at least get the ticket cancelled?

After all if the candidate had won(who knows he might have) then wouldnt Nehru Ji and the Congress been held responsible for it?

    • May 31, 2009 6:34 pm

      Welcome Indyeah 🙂
you are right Indyeah… people respect Congress for that reason and they delivered goods for a long time until Indira Gandhi’s tenture.. after that everything was a mess in our country… nepotism ruled… power is with one person…. corruption 😐

That candidate lost in election and Nehru would have wanted to cancel the ticket..
but the dates would have been crossed at that time…

Thanks for asking that Indyeah.. I didn’t mentioned it in my post 🙂

  12. May 31, 2009 2:31 am

Tough question ….all political parties think their position is the right one….and the voters vote with who they think is the most open to change for the better…zman sends

    • May 31, 2009 6:34 pm

Yes steve… that the way forward and voters must think wise 🙂

It is nice to know this. I was also surprised to know that the PM of the nation was not consulted while choosing the candidate. That suggests, the level of devolution of power, unlike today’s time.

Regarding Indira Gandhi’s mistakes, I can only say, she did what anybody would have done if he/she was in her position. She took charge of Congress, which followed by a vertical split in party. There were too much aspirants and Indira had to be tough. She tried to make everything centralized, which is actually harming Congress now. I think she reacted badly to a situation thinking that there was no other choice.
