Good one series – Nehru’s speech

Hi friends, I have came across this editorial in the tamil daily Dinamani few days before(on the election day, May 13). Its really thought provoking and wonderful. So I am sharing it with you all. The content goes as follows:

        After India declared itself as a Republic, in the first elections held on the year 1952. Our then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was campaigning for congress party.

         Today’s Madhya Pradesh was then called as ‘Vindhya Pradesh’. In there is an assembly seat called ‘Reva’. For that seat, Reva kingdom’s King Rao Shivbhadur Singh has contested on behalf of congress party.

       The details said about Reva’s king by a freedom fighter who resided with Nehru in the prison, while going to campaign in the Reva assembly seat made Nehru worried. A mass gathering was organized in Reva to introduce the canditates by Nehru. He hurriedly went to the stage and started to speak:

         “On the part of Congress party, we have announced the candidates for assembly and parliamentary seats. If India’s freedom, unity, democracy needs to be safeguarded, it’s important that Congress party must form the government. At the same time, if you think that each and every candidate was selected and made to stand by Nehru, then its wrong and it is not possible also. We are just accepting the candidates who are referred by the state and district committees. So don’t think that everybody made to stand by the congress party were uncorrupted or highly qualified.

         For me congress party is important. I believe that it can only safeguard this nation in a united and free manner. But for me, democracy is more important than congress. If democracy prevails in this country only, the freedom and unity will be safeguarded. For India’s democracy to be safeguarded you must elect the good candidates as your representatives. Murderers, people with criminal backgrounds, anti-social elements, those who use their position for their good, those who give troubles to harijans, those who are communally motivated, if they belong to congress party also, please don’t elect them. Due to those candidates, democracy will fumble and our freedom will become meaningless.

         On coming here, I came across news that there is many criminal cases on the Reva King Rao Shiv Bhadur Singh who is contesting as congress candidate. There was a case on him that when he was in the government of Vindhya Pradesh, he along with his deputy has helped the Panna diamond mine by creating fake documents and for that he has got Rs.25000 as bribe. If you think that he is Jawaharlal Nehru’s candidate then that is the cheat you are doing to the democracy. Don’t vote for any candidates just because you like congress or socialist party. Even though Rao Rao Shiv Bhadur Singh is congress candidate, he is a wrong candidate. You must defeat him and safeguard the democracy!”   

saying that he started to get down from stage very fast. 

     So friends, do you think that any present political leader has the guts to say that the candidate chosen by them was a wrong one and defeat him/her. This kind of things always make me wonder of how great the leaders of our nation in the past, who only thinks about the country.
