Paes and me

June 18, 2009

Respect for what he has done:

When the whole world(Including India) went erupted and rightly so, when the Tennis history’s one of the most complete player, Roger Federer, won the French open, one thing went unnoticed or underplayed even in India also, is the win of Leander Paes in doubles, India’s most profilic tennis player I have seen. A man always plays with unusual grit and determination for an Indian at the highest level, he won this at the age of 35 which many will consider in Tennis as beyond the retirement age. I couldn’t think that this was at the twilight of his career he won this. He is still good for many more, I guess.

I always have a personal liking towards him than Hesh because while I was a kid, I used to see a lot of Davis cup matches. He always used to play three matches on 3 continous days(winning all of them many a times) and he done that for almost 7 or 8 years. You could sense the pride and passion on his face and whole body while he was playing for India. And there will be some sort of certainity that he will win even against the best in the davis cup ties. One match I still remember was his one against Goran Ivansevic. It’s a must win match for India(next one is for Mahesh Bhupathi’s but he was not such a good singles player) and everybody were pinning their hopes on him but the odds were against him. Why not? Who will favour a above 100 rank player for a player who challenges every one of the top 10 players in the world. As expected Ivansevic took first 2 sets but Paes came back really strongly to bag the next 3 sets, closed both the match and the tie. Score was: 6-7(4) 4-6 7-6(3) 6-4 6-1. He has many such famous davis cup wins.

And who can forget his bronze medal winning in Atlanta Olympics. He was the player from whom medal is least expected but he was the only one who delievered in that whole olympics for India. If at all, his wrist was not injured, who knows, he might have been beaten Andre Agassi and went into the final. But his singles Slam record is not so great one. He always goes that extra yard when he plays for India and not for him. At 35, he again conquered a Slam after receiving a treatment for the injury he suffered in his eyes. If he has done well in the singles in his heydays he could have been the inspiration for the youngsters but somehow he missed the plot. But I don’t know why many were still not considering doubles as good as the singles. For being a doubles player, one must have good volleying ability and sharp reflexes. They may lack the physical stamina of the singles players but still they will match them in their won den(doubles).

Harry Potter fan, me:

Guess what?? I have become a Harry potter fan 🙂 Check my sidebar too. It will say in which house I have been placed by Sorting hat ;)(Who will not like to be there) Many of you would have judged it when I have said that I have started because it’s a phenomenon. And also I am bang on target now. All my target was a book a week. 2 weeks gone and I am already through 2 books. And I am through the second book in no time, according to my standards. It really took 11 days to finish the first one and I finished the second one in 3 days. All the time I am reading the book now, while standing or sitting in the bus, while travelling in the rarin.. and the only fear for me now is, whether I will miss the stop or station where I have to get down :D(that won’t worry me much now as I can read some more while getting back to correct one :D). On Monday, it was morning 3:45 A.M when I have finished my internet browsing and then picked up the second book ‘Chamber of Secrets’ which had last 50 pages to finish it up. There’s nothing concerned me, time or anything and when I finished it up and looked at the clock it’s sharp 5(I have to start to office by morning). I never read any book like this with a sense of excitement and never got deseparated when I am not able to read one(Anyway I have to go to office and work for 9 hours and I don’t like reading books there, even if I am free). And while going to office, again I read some 30 out of 50 pages. It’s really really engaging. This is absolutely new experience. According to me, the first book moved at a steady pace with some twists and turns here and there. The second book, until halfway given no hints(its dull too) of the explosion going to happen in the last 75 to 90 pages and I am just excited by the way the bits and pieces given in the first 10 chapters woven beautifully for a dark last 50 pages. It’s really frightening.

Now I have started 3rd book and hoping to finish it off soon as in the 4th book Voldemart appears and confronts with Harry.. can’t wait.. I am running 🙂

PS 1: Now you would have known that there is no real connection between me and Paes except in the title 😀

PS 2: I am sad as Harry Potter has only 7 parts 😦

I don’t like Paes much ’cause I think he’s arrogant but I do admire his tenacity…He doesn’t give up and that’s a characteristic that needs to be applauded and admired…I wish I were like that!

    • June 18, 2009 5:18 pm

True bones… he is somewhat arrogant but still plays with big heart always.. 🙂 I admire him to in beyond odds 🙂

Never knew that peas is 35 years old and i was thinking he is 20+.If it was cricket media would have highlighted that sucess, but peas getting French open doubles was ignored 😦

When i read the title i thought u met peas 😉

    • June 20, 2009 3:17 am

Hmmm… our newspapers always gives priority to cricket.. if sachin hits a century they just don’t say that… there will be statistics on when, where and whom against he scored all his previous and some 3 to 4 articles on that… for paes, they are not ready to give a good view on how he won the match 😦

And thanks for reminding me Saritha 🙂 Actually I have seen Paes in Chennai 2 years ago and got autograph from him 🙂

Tennis is one of my favorite sports ( It would have been my favorite had I not been in India … lol … Cricket is destined to be favorite of majority of Indians 😀 ) ….

Paes and Bhupati has brought so many grand slams to India …. and as you mentioned , Olympic medal for Paes as well …. what I find really sad is that they never got even the half of fame and publicity that India has provided Sania Mirza with …. the unsung heroes indeed … 😦

And now coming to the second part …. Harry Potter …. you just got to read it in order to fell in love with … 😀 … its awesome ….. I read the last book of the series “Deathly Hallows” in some 15 hours … and that too on the trot …..

Only 7 books …. true … but they are so good that you won’t get bored reading them again and again 😀 ….

    • June 20, 2009 3:23 am

Leander is a real fighter. He may not be a sensational talent in the world of tennis or an extremely efficient, supremely fit, robot-like tennis player but he does have that ability to punch well above his weight due to his tenacity. Doubles really suits his game very well since he can team up with talented players and steam roller any opposition. Even in singles, he has proved time and again that he is an underdog that even top players should be wary of, because of his fighting abilities.

I’m a Pottermaniac as well! 🙂 Just like you, I hadn’t read any of the Potter books until the fourth one came out. Out of sheer curiosity, I borrowed the first Potter book. I simply couln’t put it down! Then, I managed to read four books within the span of a week or two. And I read the fifth, sixth and seventh ones almost continuously as far as possible, even losing plenty of sleep in the process. J.K.Rowling simply rocks!!! 🙂

    • June 20, 2009 3:31 am

Yes Raj,, ,,, he is a real fighter and I like that quality of him and he always make India proud by the way he is playing… I am a great fan and admirer of him 🙂

      Thats really cool Raj… It’s such a good book, isn’t it?? that’s really fast raj… 4 in 2 weeks time 🙂
      she rocks, I agree 🙂

  13. June 19, 2009 11:55 pm

Books and sports!!! hmmm…I have no idea what to comment. Im allergic to both of them !!

  14. June 20, 2009 1:57 am

I like Leander Paes and his sheer grit ..I mean even at his age..that calls for some praise!

he has got the biggest heart of them all! 🙂

I LOVE the Harry Potter collection! 😀
I have the whole series! *whoopiieee*!!* 😀

and I know all the characters by heart 😀
