Harry Potter – Part I – III – Book review

July 28, 2009

Considering the alieniation I had with books, its not a surprise that this is my first post fully dedicated to book. Just want to share my views on the Harry Potter book in the form of review, so that I will not reveal the whole story which will affect the pleasure of reading. Hope I will do this ok.

Basic of Harry Potter books is, each book deals with one year life of Harry from July. The most Prominent characters of this book apart from Harry Potter are Professor Albus Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwarts, Professor Minerva McGonagall, Head of Gryffindor house, Proffessor Severus Snape, Head of Slytherin house, Professor Sprout, Head of Hufflepuff house, Professor Flitwick, Head of Ravenclaw house, Rubeus Hagrid, Gamekeeper of Hogwarts and friend of Harry, then there are students Neville Longbottom, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Ginny Weasley, twins Fred and George Weasley, Parents of the Weasleys, Mr.Arthur and Mrs. Molly, Draco Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle, Luna Lovegood, Dean Thomas, Seaman Finnigan and many more and last one, Lord Voldemort.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone:

First book of the series and also lighter in the way things are going and also magic of all the books. Harry was handed over by Dumbledore to the Dursleys who happens to be his aunt, after Lord Voldemort kills his father and mother. After spending 10 good years(!!!!) at the Dursleys, he gets a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. After initial resistance from Dursleys he goes to the school. There he finds his friends Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger and also Draco Malfoy, with whom he is in loggerheads. As that year passes on, they came to know about Philisopher’s stone and Voldemort was keen on reaching it and returning to his body. But now the question how he is functioning now and  who is helping him??? Harry can’t resist himself on finding it. Ron and Hemione were joining him. In between, Quidditch, classes and detentions were going on.

This is the smallest book of the series, but didn’t less in the content. Most of the character and location developments were happening in this book. Each and everything explained in this book builds up for the next one. I can’t say it is not put downable. But its really enjoyable to read all the magic.

My rating: 3.5/5

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets:

Now Harry and his friends were returning to the Hogwarts for the second year. This time they were joined by the Sister of Ron Weasley, Ginny. As the school is going on fine, Harry hears some strange voices and lot of the students get petrified. Then they were seeing the writing on the wall ‘The Chamber of secrets were open again. Enemies of heir of Slytherins beware’. When many of the students were doubting Harry, Harry, Ron and Hermione were doubting Draco Malfoy. Strange things were happening inside the Hogwarts Castle and Dumbledore is sacked from Headmaster post for not controlling the things. When the school is about to be closed, the truth comes out. Once again Harry and his friends were in the thinck of action. But who is the real heir of Slytherin and what lies inside the Chamber of Secret??? the answers for this questions are well answered by J.K.Rowling.

I have a personal liking for this book in this series. This is the book which made me to read all the books in one go. I must admit that the first part of this book is really dragging and we don’t what happening there. But the last 60 pages were really action packed and interesting. I have read them over and over again, Thoroughly enjoyable. New thing like Parseltongue is introduced in this book and also Dobby a new, small, nice, laovable character gets introduced to us.

My rating: 4/5

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban:

Now the third year starts for the Harry and his friends. But before he can reach the school, the news is broke out that Sirius Black is escaped from the Azkaban prison in pursuit of Harry. Nobody has ever escaped from it and he is the first one to do so, makes him more dangerous. To catch him, Ministry of magic patrols the Hogwarts castle with the help of Dementors who will cause the feel of hopelessness when they are around. Harry was forbidden from roaming around the castle after hours. But still while playing the Quidditch the dementors comes there and he fears them most. Remus Lupin joins the school as the new defence against dark arts teacher whom helps Harry in encountering the dementors. But what Sirius Black is really upto? who betrayed whom??

This book tells more about the Harry’s father James Potter and a new place is introdued this time called ‘Hogsmeade’. There are many twists in this book which keeps us hooked till the end. This book won’t give a complete feel as the other 2 gives. And you can find it when catch that.

My rating: 4/5

Short Review of Harry Potter 6 film:

Harry-Potter-The-Half-Blood-Prince-1

If it has been seen as an individual film, its fast and entertaining. CG is really great in this film. And also the performance of many. But if we see it as an adaption of a novel, it failed miserably. The importance given to the love and the CG, has not given to the main theme of the book, Horcruxes. Every student in this film, were roaming around with love feeling and nothing else. I don’t how they are going to start the 7th part of the film without giving any idea about Horcruxes.

My Punch: High in grandeur, very less in content.
