Harry Potter – IV – V – book review

August 5, 2009

In this post, I am going to review the 4th and 5th book of the Harry Potter Series. The gloomy dark things for this series is popularly known by many, starts from the 4th book and continues.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire:

Wormtail joins Lord Voldemort making him little more powerful and  to help him to return to his body. For Harry, strange things are happening around him. They are going to watch the quidditch world cup, after which the dark mark, a sign of the dark lord is conjured in sky sending down shivers among all wizards. As he and his friends returns to the Hogwarts, a shocking news reches them that the Triwizard tournament is going to be conducted among the three wizard schools, instead of Quidditch. And the qualification to participate is, a student must be over 17 years of age at that time. And one student from each school will be selected by the Goblet of fire. Fleur Delacour from Beauxbatons, Viktor Krum from Durmstrang and Cedric Diggory from Hogwarts are getting selected as the champions from their respective schools. Suprisingly, Goblet also selects Harry who is just 14 for the tournament. Everybody were throwing suspicious look at him on how he was able to get selected by the Goblet.

Alastor Mad-eye Moody joins the Hogwarts as the new Defence against the Dark arts teacher and he shows a personal liking towards Harry. There are 3 tasks for the champions. First one is, retrieving the golden egg from the Dragon, which holds the clue for the second task, in which they have to save their beloved one from the mermaids who are under the lake of Hogwarts and the third task is to move through the mazes to get the cup. Harry gets help from varied sources for each of the task to complete it. While all this was happening, Barty Crouch, head od the department of the international magical corporation starts to behave in a bizarre way.

Atlast something happens which makes Harry to see Lord Voldemort  returning to his body. So what happens there, who is responsible for the inclusion of Harry in the Triwizard tournament and what Barty Crouch is upto are brilliantly told by J.K.Rowling. Dobby, one of my favourite character returns in this book. The action is plenty in this book and I felt myself drained out on finishing the book. This bok is almost twice the size of the 3rd book and it continues this way till the end of the series. I can’t read this book again and again and thought of giving 3. But when I read it again, a few days before, it’s interesting then also. So,

My rating: 3.5/5

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix:

Lord Voldemort has returned but the Ministry of magic refuses to believe it. Cornelius Fudge, Head of the ministry of magic was at the loggerheads with Albus Dumbledore who repeatedly confirming the dark lord’s return. Ministry was quoting whatever Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter was saying is lie and Daily Prophet, the widely read newspaper among the wizard community preaches this religiously. Dumbledore now acts swiftly to re-group the old team which fought against the Voldemort 14 years earlier. In Hogwarts, Dumbledore starts to ignore Harry and not even looking at him. Dolores Umbridge, one of the ministry personnel was sent to monitor the school. She starts to put everybody in the school to lot of troubles by passing lot of Educational decrees one by one. It forbids the students from practising magical spells and to work in groups. Umbridge starts to monitor the classes taken by the other staffs and reports it to ministry. Umbridge dislikes Harry as he was continously saying Voldemort has returned. She puts him in detention many a times.

Hogwarts students likes to learn magic and Harry Potter heads them under the name of Dumbledore’s Army. They are practising it in the Room of Requirement, a room which changes according to one’s need. But Umbridge finds it, Dumbledore was expelled for its activities and she becomes the new headmistress of Hogwarts. She sacks few teachers for no reason and hatred was growing against her. In the meantime, Harry was looking into the mind of Voldemort and seeing what he was upto. He saves Arthur Weasley, father of Ron Weasley, by this.Dumbledore wants Harry to close his mind by using Occlumency by he couldn’t do that. He appoints Professor Snape, a man he hates much, to practice Occlumency. But he ws not able to close his mind. He sees that Sirius Black, his godfather, was being tortured by Voldemort in the Mystery room to get the prophecy named Harry and Voldemort, which is in the Department of Ministry. He decides to go there and save him. His friends, also the members of DA Ron Wesley, Hermione Granger, Luna Lovegood, Neville Longbottom and Ginny Weasley joins him. The fight erupts between them and the Death eaters in the department of Ministry for the prophecy and the climax was meeting of Dumbledore and Lord Voldemort.

So is Sirius Black was really tortured, why Dumbledore was not behaving well with Harry, what the prophecy says and more importantly why Voldemort was determined to kill Harry?? Answers for these questions are in the last few engaging pages of this book.

This is the biggest of the all the books in the series and it’s quite brilliant. It has both happiness and sad in equal measure. I myself felt hating Dolores Umbridge and thats the triumph of J.K.Rowling. There are 3 important parts in this book which I love. The duel happening at the Dumbledore’s office before sacking, Fred and George Weasley’s heroics against Umbridge. Both were really good and I never mind reading them again and again. Last one is the conversation between Dumbledore and Harry at the end. It gives us everything we need to know. I love this book much  in the series along with the 2nd and 3rd one.

My Rating: 4/5

PS: I have finished Da Vinci code and now reading ‘Digital Fortress’ 🙂 🙂
