Human within Animal

October 5, 2009

As I have said earlier, I am going to share about the book I have read titled ‘Animal within Human’ written by writer Madhan. This is not written as a book but as a series of essays in Tamil political bi-weekly ‘Junior’ Vikatan.

We always used to say, “Why he/she is acting like an animal?” when somebody does something which is not in the description we have given to ourselves ‘Human’. We described human as the one who thinks before doing anything and never harms anybody for his/her wish or survival. But the above said thing is happening daily in a human life then and now. We extincted the other descendant from the Chimpanzee ‘Neanderthals’.

Then over the years man fought for territories and we can see lot of bloodsheds for land from human evolution whose value is very less than human life. In that book, I have read this interesting line… a nation’s border is determined by the war. We can add another thing… water surrounding us. How true it is? Even animals have this character of holding a particular area as their territory. So are we better than them? Okay fine. Now take the things in account before some 300 years ago. The one who is strong ruled the weaker section. The country which is stronger try to invade the other territories around them. After that they have to sustain that. I am not able to see any difference between animal and human. With each win, in addition to the soldiers killed in the war, many civilians will be killed and raped as a part of celebration. Human like animals like to show how much power he/she possess and dominance over others.

The book states, if we just remove the social constraints around us, we will become as brutal as animals. Just imagine if there is no rule to curb the robbery or murder or other things which we consider inhumanely, then we can’t say we are living in country but in forest only. So some kind of restriction is required to stop ourselves from behaving against the nature of us(animals). Even after these restrictions some were behaving like animals. And to the worst, we have seen many rulers who have tortured their country men itself. So what could be the cause of that?

The book stated that, When one’s childhood is not good, the possibility of him/her’s mind gets spoiled. Not good childhood means, not about one losing parent, even if the kid has a father but he always scolds and beats him to show his dominance over him, some kind of hatred will develop within himself and also will make him to feel inferior. His anger won’t burst out suddenly, it will take some time or it won’t happen at all due to the kind of people he meets in the later part of his life. But by some mistake, if the all the wrong things happen at the right time for a man, then there he starts to show his animal nature by killing and torturing other men/women. Many serial killers will have such bad past and will enjoy murders.

Even in our time, which we claim as civilized world, killing is allowed by law you know?? Any guesses. Its in the war. We are awarding the men for killing other men(I will try to write a post on how soldiers are trained in army for a war). But I can’t blame the soldiers. They are the prey of the big bosses who decides their action. I always say we are human within animal and we are living against the nature but that only will suit us now. So here ends my rambling 🙂

For the past 2 days I am hearing this song in repeat mode. Even though the song was released by 1991, I am just now heard it and fell in love with it. Its nice.

Hello Mr. How do u do 😛

kanagu: I never heard that… its from which movie Swaram??

I thot if I write the entire song, I mite lose my rank 😛

kanagu: LOL 😆 you can put that as second comment 😀 😀

First of all thanks Kanagu for this English version of what seems to be a gr8 write-up!

kanagu: you are always welcome Swaram 🙂 🙂

N I so agree! The first time I saw a tiger in my life, not in the zoos, in its natural habitat, I hd some sort of fear within me but then, I realized that it does nothing to u until n unless u harm it in anyway or disturb it! Even then, may be the first thing it does is go away! More than half-an-hr @ may be 4-5 feet distance with the beast and not once we felt its gng to eat us up! They becoming man-eaters is only under some circumstances eg. old age etc and even then its bcoz Man hs affected the food cycle by killing deer etc and so the tiger which can’t hunt attacks human!

kanagu: True Swaram.. as you have said we have disrupted the food chain in a big way… in a way the balance of our ecological system.. 😦

N what do men do? They hurt ppl who sometimes don’t even mean to harm them! I feel animals are better than us in many many ways! Look @ the dogs being faithful!

kanagu: Yes.. as I said no animals kills other one for joy..

even if the kid has a father but he always scolds and beats him to show his dominance over him, some kind of hatred will develop within himself and also will make him to feel inferior. – Thatz some nice analysis there and I have read a few articles in support of the same too! The way the young minds are moulded is so so important!

kanagu: Yeah.. the environment in which we grow has lot to do with our behaviour and character…

  3. October 5, 2009 1:39 pm

    2nd.

    kanagu: 🙂

Many serial killers will have such bad past and will enjoy murders.

And now we have that serial where children are treated so cruelly, if they do not know love, how will learn to love???

kanagu: True IHM… the environment in which a man grows up plays a big part…

Circumstances makes man a criminal(or the society he or she brought up).I didn’t read much about this topic. So i don’t want comment about this right now(though i have my own views about the same).probably i will discuss about the same with you later.
killing is allowed by law capital punishment is necessary kanagu.I think these terrorists, nacsaltes, mindless thugs deserve that for killing , robbing and making innocent civilians life miserable.

kanagu: So what about lives we are losing in the process.. are they terrorists??? are they not innocent???
are they deserved to die early???
how many are die for unfaithful citizens, corrupted politicians…?? are these people deserve their life to live

  5. October 5, 2009 2:07 pm

I also find it wrong that we think we are superior to animals, when infact we are cruel knowing we are causing pain. Animals only follow instinct and even then we have a dog a home who brought up our cat like a mother.

kanagu: True IHM.. we are as equal as Animals… neither Superior nor inferior…
wow.. thats really nice to hear IHM… dog bringing up cat.. 🙂 🙂

I like the kind of world, John Lennon Imagined, a world without borders, this line gave me goose bumps…‘a nation’s border is determined by the war.’

kanagu: I am yet to read John Lennon… but me and another friend Odzer discussed about the world without borders…. that is the world given to us.. 🙂 🙂
me too stunned by that line.. its true…

    Brilliant post Kanagu!!!

    kanagu: Thanks IHM 🙂

    • October 5, 2009 3:06 pm

Kanagu, you haven’t heard John Lennon or the Beatles? Blasphemy! Start your education immediately – go buy some Lennon and Beatles albums…They are a must…

      kanagu: Gonna start now Bones… 🙂 🙂

I agree with IHM, the world would be a better place if it were like what Lennon imagined it to be…

kanagu: It surely will be a great place to live 🙂

      • October 5, 2009 6:04 pm

So let’s begin your education Kanagu 😆
Here are the lyrics of ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon.

        Imagine there’s no heaven
        It’s easy if you try
        No hell below us
        Above us only sky
        Imagine all the people
        Living for today…

        Imagine there’s no countries
        It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
        And no religion too
        Imagine all the people
        Living life in peace…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

        Imagine no possessions
        I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
        A brotherhood of man
        Imagine all the people
        Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

Thoughtful post and translation, Kanagu. Agree with IHM. 🙂

      kanagu: Thanks Don 🙂

  6. October 5, 2009 3:04 pm

A very good post and a great translation…

    kanagu: Thanks Bones 🙂

  7. October 5, 2009 3:08 pm

You’ve given us a lot to think about in this post, Kanagu!

    kanagu: 🙂 🙂

While it is true that humans are like animals in many ways, there is, I think, a difference.

We keep an ideal of rising above our animal instincts. Though we do not always succeed in this, we try. No one thinks that violence is preferable. The ideal is to avoid killing.

kanagu: Yes.. many were trying to get over those natural instincts.. the point is whats the gain in killing the people.. if an animal kills means its for his/her food na..

Barbaric ways of killing like the guillotine of the French revolution or the gas chambers of the Nazis are condemned and done away with.

Maybe we do not succeed but we do try, I think.

kanagu: Anything will happen with Nuclear weapons Manju.. I am feared by them..

  8. October 5, 2009 5:07 pm

Humans are most certainly much lower than animals if it means being nice…

yea we have become more powerful… but not nicer…

    kanagu: 😦 😦

  9. October 5, 2009 6:44 pm

    Hmm interesting post

    kanagu: Thanks Reema 🙂

  10. October 5, 2009 7:42 pm

But my point is if they keep on killing and terrorise innocent people for money to lead luxury life style and assualting women for momentary pleasures, then they deserve it.” For all who take the sword will perish by the sword”.

kanagu: Hey machi.. I am asking soldiers and police… are their lives are not worthy to live… or is it a kind of sacrifice for us to live??

Even normal police officers are scared of them(what to do even they have families and all). What kind of punishment you can suggest for them.
@ Terrorists—our javans have only two options …either kill those inhuman psychs or killed by them.To prevent another nov-26,sep- 11,mumbai bomb blasts, we need encounters .What to do kanagu we are not living in a peaceful world. So we have to be practical

kanagu: True.. I am not supporting those terrorists…. I am talking about war… when two countries soldiers who don’t know whats the reason behind it..

  11. October 6, 2009 1:06 am

Heyyy, Im a human within an animal and thats much better than being like you all 😀 😀 😀

kanagu: Bro.. everybody were like that only 😀

Nice post Kanagu ! I second each and every word there ! and Im surprised that you are listening to that song only now. It was a huge hit back then !

kanagu: I know.. but I am hooked up to it now.. better late than never 🙂

  12. October 6, 2009 7:00 am

MANIMAL! Well, the only difference I see between Man (Includes WOMAN) and Animals is that of size of the brain and imagination power. But otherwise we are all the same.

    kanagu: Nice explanation Suji 🙂

That part about having a bad childhood is quite true.

But on the other hand (itching to crticize) I felt the book should have given more practical solution to these issues 🙂

kanagu: Solution are suggested by many psychologists many a times… treat ur child with respect 🙂 🙂

  13. October 6, 2009 9:42 am

I so much agree with the post & article!!! I strongly believe that the roots to our thoughts are laid in our childhood & we are nothing but a reflection of our parents!!!

    Nice post!

kanagu: True Smita… its always important to have a good childhood 🙂

    and thank you 🙂

Very well translated and interesting post kanagu…..

    kanagu: Thanks Rashmi 🙂

I m firm beleiver of fact that child is reflection of parent…..u need not to teach him anything..he just pick up bad/good habbits from parents..

    kanagu: True.. very true 🙂

  15. October 6, 2009 8:54 pm

Yes, Kanagu, people who had good/secured childhood, do not think aggressively. Children who grow with violent parents or who get into bad company, in later years, tend to change into hardcore criminals. But here, too, some thinking people, with good education, try their best to be normal, peace-loving human beings.

kanagu: yeah… its all depends on our parents and also the people whom we meet in our shaping up years.. and the happenings around us… lot of factors…

You have analyzed human behavior very nicely. Very good post, Kanagu.

    kanagu: thank you 🙂
but I have put just the collective info from book… have you read that?? ‘Manithanukkul Mirugam’..

  16. October 7, 2009 4:35 am

    good one machi!

    reminds me of these lines:

    Kadavul pathi, mirugam pathi,
    Kalanthu seiytha kalavai naan.

    kanagu: Thanks machi 🙂

  17. October 7, 2009 11:48 am

Have you read Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy? It states that mice rule the earth 😀
    Must read, that one.

kanagu: Will read for sure Meira.. 🙂

  18. October 7, 2009 12:06 pm

A thought provoking book Kanagu. and thanks for writing about it.

    kanagu: Thanks Shruti.. 🙂

Man is a complex being and its hard to say what leads a person to think or act in a certain way. This book could be one of of the ways to look at his/her behavior. it is an interesting outlook 🙂

kanagu: I am really sure Shruti.. if a man turns evil, he should have went thru some bad childhood experiences..

  19. October 7, 2009 12:27 pm

Nice and interesting post thambi, sorry of coming late here.

kanagu: Thanks akka.. 🙂 no need for sorries come and read when you have time.. 🙂

We dominate animals just because we are strong and can easliy kill them.

When one’s childhood is not good, the possibility of him/her’s mind gets spoiled— this so true thambi, without our knowledge kids learn and adapt parents and as well as there surroundings.

    kanagu: true true 😐 😐

  20. October 7, 2009 9:22 pm

da be dee de daem books, books, books.

    kanagu: What’s that mean mach???

  21. October 8, 2009 4:18 pm

    Very nicely put Kanagu!

    kanagu: Thanks Mystery 🙂

  22. October 13, 2009 1:00 am

gosh, this was a wonderful read kanagu!

    kanagu: Thanks Crafty.. 🙂

i have always believed that we are wrose off than animals… when it comes to love and compassion, or rather , lack of it in us!
se can be cruel and cause harm at various levels, be it physical or emotional, and with fll knowledge of what we are doing 😦

kanagu: We have really really misused our power… 😦 all because of the sixth sense we have got,… I guess..

thanks for the english version… i loved it, and agree with all that is said… the need to dominate and make sure we make this “power” very obvious, is where we seem to have lost “humanity” that is supposed to define a property of human beings…

    kanagu: 😦 😦 😦

animals! sigh. u know what appeals me most? their capability to love with no expectations! 🙂 i try to be like that most times!

kanagu: Thats really really true crafty… their unconditional love always amazes me…

how is that doggie u were to make friends with and pat on the head???
    😀 😀 😀

kanagu: me somewhat comfortable now… but still a feared one to touch the doggie..

  23. October 27, 2009 9:30 pm

Humans are animals, of course. Actually, we are worse than most animals. Apes are creatures that have their hands free most of the time, unlike other animals. So they can be better than others, but they aren’t. And apes with opposable thumbs can do more with their hands than normal apes. Yet, they are the most dangerous creatures. These lowly freaks of Nature with opposable thumbs are like Franskenstein monsters 😡

kanagu: yes.. but its our nature to be offensive and we are acting against and calling ourselves as civilized people 😐
