2012 – [2009]

December 2, 2009
‘We were warned’ – the tagline of the film says so. But they should chosen some other year other than 2012 because people have no fear or there is no enough proofs for that the world will be over by that year. But then titles are very little relevance to a film like this which purely carried on by special effects.

_________________________________________________________________________

The film opens in India, in the year 2009, in which the American scientist Adrian meets his friend Dr.Santam in Delhi. Santam explains to Adrian that the neutrinos act as a microwave which causes the Earth core’s temperature to increase rapidly. From there on the story is being built upon towards to building a ship in Himalayas which could accommodate 400,000 people. As everybody in the film, knows that its out of their hands they give up. Even American president dies in this. On the other hand, a small family escapes from the California and reaches the ship.

_________________________________________________________________________

There is no human emotion at all. We couldn’t relate ourselves to the people who are running to save their lives which are an important requisite for a disaster film. Too many characters but very less importance was given to the character building. Everybody cries and most of them die. There are some heart pumping moments if we see this kind of film for the first time. Else this is a run-of-a-mill affair at the story front.

Having said all the disappointing things above, the thing which will draw audiences to the theatre is its state-of-the-art Computer Graphics. Even though it gets monotonous at times, it’s enjoyable if we see it in the big screen. City California was completely destroyed with the roads cracking and opening up, the skyscrapers falling and by the end of the day the whole city was gone. Another notable mention has to be given to the massive ship created for the final sequences and all those little moments which gives a chill in spine.

Roland Emmerich carefully planned this as a global film and made enough efforts to make scenes in India, China, Brazil and some important economies where this film will click big time. And we could see responses from audiences by cheering whenever India is shown. I am surprised when the people started to clap when his name was shown in end credits. But there he is, with a winner. He has a like towards the disaster movies but this is not his best in that series. I enjoyed his Day after tomorrow more than this.

The other thing I like about Emmerich is, his underlying message ‘Man can never win over nature’.

2012 – Special effects.

Some trivias:

  • The film is based on the non-fiction book Fingerprints of the Gods.
  • This is one of the biggest Hits in Tamilnadu, making other big heroes films shy. For the first 3 weeks it continuously ran houseful shows in Satyam which is record, I guess.
  • A television series is going to be telecasted based on this film. The serial will start focusing about the survivors of the film.

PS: If you like to watch this film watch it in theatre in as much as big screen as possible. If you miss it in theatre, then you can better leave this one go.

  6. December 2, 2009 5:37 pm

hey and yeah I used to watch arabian nights – the song alif laila will kinda linger many a times 😀 such lovely times as you say our childhood would have been incomplete without doordarshan.

kanagu: True.. and SIGH… these generation can say only cartoon network and Pogo which lacks the variety of the doordarshan…

  10. December 2, 2009 11:47 pm

heard a lot about its animation and effects… need to watch it 🙂
    hope its worth watching 🙂

kanagu: In big screen… its worth watching 🙂 🙂

i saw the film myself…. with my bro since he wanted to see it…

went with low expectations since i heard mixed reviews… but i actually liked the film. of course its nothing that great… but still i enjoyed it nevertheless.
the SPX was of course mindblowing. there’s something cheesy abt watching the destruction of the world.

kanagu: Me too went like that… no expectations at all… but still enjoyed it.. 🙂 as you have said SFX is superb in this movie…

what is ironical in this case is that the audience who is watching the film, wud be (if this ever took place in reality) among the imagined dead!!! 🙂 think about it!

kanagu: he he he… thats a fun part.. anyway no such thing will happen by 2012..

i liked how they inter-connected so many characters and countries….and brought in continuity to it…
but otherwise, its still a forgettable film…

food for thought… will the world really end in 2012? or just it does mean the end of a cycle in the mayan calender?

kanagu: I didn’t understand about the Mayan calendar at all.. so no worries for me… 😀 😀

  12. December 3, 2009 1:12 am

I will watch it on PPV like most other movies. These days I only see animated movies with my daughter. 😦

kanagu: But I don’t think it will be good to watch this film in TV Solilo.. better leave it.. there are better films to watch in TV…
    is Peanut enjoying animation movies???

  13. December 3, 2009 5:19 pm

Che! Have they stopped making decent movies? Haven’t seen one in a long long time!

kanagu: he he he… did you watched ‘Inglourious basterds’??? its good….

A friend had warned me about this movie before hand. So I let it pass.

Thankfully it was the right decision.

kanagu: he he he…. cool bro 🙂 🙂

  15. December 3, 2009 9:25 pm

All in all an average disaster film! I saw it, but frankly have a difficulty in remembering anything of it!! But yeah I remember the Indian characters. The family who died.

kanagu: Actually there is nothing to remember… all is to enjoy the CG and forget the whole thing…

  16. December 3, 2009 9:46 pm

    Going to skip it.

    kanagu: 🙂 🙂

  17. December 3, 2009 10:42 pm

  18. December 4, 2009 4:45 am

i think i will opt for the book instead! 😀

kanagu: I think its worth watching in theatre if you like SFX… 🙂

  20. December 7, 2009 12:25 am

I think it ran continuously houseful for three weeks in satyam bcos there was no other worthwhile tamil movie to watch! Here, this movie was dubbed and it still ran very well! I guess for the same reason!

    Destination Infinity

kanagu: It had some brilliant visuals which has drawn the people to theatres DI.. after a long time an English film is running full houses here… so its both of it…

  21. December 7, 2009 2:04 pm

Nice review thambi. Its almost 5 years i didnt go to a cinema hall 😦

kanagu: Oh.. thats a long time… 😦 😦 is there is no theatre in Dubai????

    • December 10, 2009 11:57 am

I am not sure whether my kids will sit in the cinema hall for 3 hours,so never went to see movies in the cinema hall

kanagu: hmmm… thats right.. then you can some animation movies from home… they will be good 🙂 🙂 and varu and pinky too will enjoy it 🙂 🙂

  22. December 8, 2009 12:24 am

Yep other than graphics, there is nothing much in the movie. The Indians speak fake hindi, I burst into laughter hearing that guy speak hindi. I am sure he is an ABCD or someone who has never set foot in Indian soil 😛
Not sure if you have seen “The day after tomorrow”, by the same director. Watch it if you get a chance. That movie was brilliant and better than 2012. 🙂
Nice review from you as usual 🙂

kanagu: He he he… actually this is a template story of Hollywood which was grinded again and again every 5 years 🙂 and as I don’t know hindi much I missed that fun part 😦 😦
I have seen that film and liked it too… 🙂 🙂
    Thanks AK… 🙂 🙂
