2012 –
The film opens in India, in the year 2009, in which the American scientist Adrian meets his friend Dr.Santam in Delhi. Santam explains to Adrian that the neutrinos act as a microwave which causes the Earth core’s temperature to increase rapidly. From there on the story is being built upon towards to building a ship in Himalayas which could accommodate 400,000 people. As everybody in the film, knows that its out of their hands they give up. Even American president dies in this. On the other hand, a small family escapes from the California and reaches the ship.
There is no human emotion at all. We couldn’t relate ourselves to the people who are running to save their lives which are an important requisite for a disaster film. Too many characters but very less importance was given to the character building. Everybody cries and most of them die. There are some heart pumping moments if we see this kind of film for the first time. Else this is a run-of-a-mill affair at the story front.
Having said all the disappointing things above, the thing which will draw audiences to the theatre is its state-of-the-art Computer Graphics. Even though it gets monotonous at times, it’s enjoyable if we see it in the big screen. City California was completely destroyed with the roads cracking and opening up, the skyscrapers falling and by the end of the day the whole city was gone. Another notable mention has to be given to the massive ship created for the final sequences and all those little moments which gives a chill in spine.
Roland Emmerich carefully planned this as a global film and made enough efforts to make scenes in India, China, Brazil and some important economies where this film will click big time. And we could see responses from audiences by cheering whenever India is shown. I am surprised when the people started to clap when his name was shown in end credits. But there he is, with a winner. He has a like towards the disaster movies but this is not his best in that series. I enjoyed his Day after tomorrow more than this.
The other thing I like about Emmerich is, his underlying message ‘Man can never win over nature’.
2012 – Special effects.
The film is based on the non-fiction book Fingerprints of the Gods.
This is one of the biggest Hits in Tamilnadu, making other big heroes films shy. For the first 3 weeks it continuously ran houseful shows in Satyam which is record, I guess.
A television series is going to be telecasted based on this film. The serial will start focusing about the survivors of the film.
PS: If you like to watch this film watch it in theatre in as much as big screen as possible. If you miss it in theatre, then you can better leave this one go.
