He loves me, He loves me not – [2002]

December 12, 2009

Note: Whatever I am writing down below is a spoiler, even though I am not going to reveal the complete story. I will assure you that this is really a good movie and if you think you will watch this for sure you can skip this and can read after watching the film. You can see the trailer to get a better picture.

When I was searching for a good romantic film I found this gem. But alas I did a mistake. Yes… I made a mistake by choosing this film by title. I didn’t seen any review but only thing I know is this film will be good as my favorite reviewer James Bardenelli has given this film 4/4 stars. I was took by surprise when each scene of this film unfolded. This film has intelligent screenplay and this what makes me to rate this film above any film and just below Pulp fiction, one of my favorites.

The film opens with Angelique buys a pink rose and asks the shop owner to deliver it for her love, Dr. Loic, a cardiologist, as a surprise gift as his birthday is coming soon. She was a art student who does well in her academics, besides she works in a cafe shop. Her friend David who has interest in her asks her to stop loving Loic as he is married. But she refuses and states that he will come for her by abandoning his wife, Rachel, a lawyer, who is pregnant at that time. She draws him and gives it as a birthday gift to him. One day while traveling she faces an accident in her moped and returns to the shop.

Loic’s wife Rachel has a miscarriage and they get separated. Angelique becomes really happy and when she plans to go with him to Florence, Italy. She gets ready and waits in the airport but he doesn’t come there or not even making a call. She gets vexed and wants to end her relationship with Dr.Loic. But while browsing through the channels she finds that he is in trouble for hitting his one of his patient, Sonia Jasmin, when she goes there for treatment.

Angelique goes to Sonia’s home and asks her to drop the charges against Loic. She refuses and this turns into a little tussle in which the Sonia dies due to illness in heart. Next day she runs to see Loic in his office but she was heartbroken to see Rachel being around him and helping him to tackle the case. She returns to room and by night turns on the gas and lies on the floor.

So if you think that’s the end of the story, please wait there is some more. But I am not going to reveal it. If I reveal anything more than this, it will take out the excitement factor from this film.

The acting of all the lead characters were too good especially Audrey Tautou, who plays the lead character Angelique. Others are also not far behind. The film is rich in colour so its a visual treat for all of us. But the thing which sets apart this film is its screenplay. Wonderfully scripted and superbly executed.

This is the first film for this film’s director Laetitia Colombani, which is really hard to believe. She keeps up the suspense and builds the things slowly and keeps us guessing. I couldn’t see a single frame in this 90 minute movie was wasted.

He loves me, He loves me not – Keep guessing.
