World Cup Quarter Finals – Preview
After the engrossing 2nd round now the football WC moves to the Quarter Finals with me still to get heartbreak (Argentina is still there… Hoping they will be champions). I have watched few matches missed few and on my observation here is a preview for the QF’s which going to be played from today.
Holland Vs Brazil:
One of the most expected clash with both teams known for their flair for the past few decades. But what differentiates them from their past team is their defence which just gives no opposition strikers a chance to sniff at their goal.
Brazilians under Dunga has become efficient footballers with attacking when its necessary that too with precision. In the game against Chile even though they didn’t controlled the possession much they scored when needed and each one is a deadly strike. In Fabiano they have one of the great strikers in the world right now with Robinho and Kaka providing inch perfect passes for him. Their Midfield has Daniel Alves, Gilberto Silva and Felipe Melo which is solid while defending and when they come up in flank gives a scare. Elano is out of tournament now and that may cause few problems in their line-up. Lucio, Juan, Bastos and Maicon provides a perfect defence with Maicon raiding up from right back to provide those through balls to his strikers. Surely Brazil is a team to beat now.
Holland matches Brazil man to man in forward with Van Persie as lone striker, Robben and Van-der Waart as wingers and Wesley Snejider as Playmaker. Surely an attack which can penetrate through any defence. The return of Robben adds a lot to the Holland attack. But they haven’t played a top team like Brazil and their Midfield and defense will be tested by the attacking trio of Fabiano, Kaka and Robinho.
My prediction: Brazil winning the match convincingly. But if Holland’s defence stands up then it’s a contest which may swing to anybody’s favour. Hope the Holland’s defense picks itself up.
Uruguay Vs Ghana:
Didn’t watched the both teams playing much. But from what I have read about them Uruguay is the favorite to win this match but with the whole continent’s support Ghana may rewrite the script by becoming the first African nation to reach the Semi Finals.
Argentina Vs Germany:
A match I am eagerly waiting for but also being aware that there is only one outcome from this match will make me happy. Germany demonstrated that how deadly they can be if the defense is sloppy. And Argentina presents the perfect situation for them to exploit. They don’t have great pacy defenders a curse which caused for the reason for the downfall of England. But on the flip side Germany too have to face the likes of Messi, Tevez and Higuain an attack which will send the shiver down to the spine of any defence.
Germany with Oezil in the playmaker role flourished till now. But if Argentina captain Javier Mascherao, Argentina’s only holding midfielder negates him then Germany find the going tough. For Argentina Messi was the playmaker but none of the Germany midfielders have much of a defensive capability and all the three midfielders Mueller, Scheweinstiger and Keidra love to play upfront which will leave their 4 defenders tackling all the 3 Argentine forwards a weakness Argentine team will try to expose. So with both the defense haven’t tested much makes up for an exciting contest and goalfest.
My Prediction: Germany wins the match narrowly. Even though I want it to be otherwise, from what I have seen Germany is slightly better. (Last time when they both played against each other in 2006 WC, I thought Argentina was better and I was proved wrong. Wishing I will be proved wrong again).
Spain Vs Paraguay:
It can’t get easier for Spain who are willing to break the shackles and to win their first world cup. Even though Paraguay has put up a solid performance till now, they won’t be much of a match to the Spain’s midfield which will suck the life out of any attack in the world. In Villa Spain have a great finisher inside penalty area.
My prediction: Spain wins the match comfortably.
PS: Sorry for the delay in commenting and reply to the comments. I am totally into this world cup which makes me not to miss even an article. I will surely read the missed posts by weekend and comment on them 🙂 🙂
That was a good preview. For a person like me, who knows nothing about FIFA it really helps..Atleast I can sync with my hubby when he watches the match….Thanks kanagu

kanagu: ha ha ha.. 🙂 🙂 hope he reads this 😉
Argentina’s defense is horrible. That’s why they lost to Germany. After the second goal their spirits simply went down.
To me it looks like Spain will be winning. The semifinal match featuring Germany and Spain must be a exciting one. I have a feeling that Spain will expose the German defense.
kanagu: True.. Argentina defense is exposed…. 😦 😦
I am also expecting an exciting match between Germany and Spain… me too love to see Spain…
more football !!!
ur 55 word was good !
kanagu: Thanks Deeps 🙂 🙂
What are your predictions for Semi finals? One is about to start in one hour 🙂
kanagu: One match is over… for the other one.. both of them have equal chance… but I think Spain will expose German defense… so they can win..
Brazil and Argentina weren’t really tested in the group stages as they had comfortable wins over their opponents, including the second round. This perhaps made them a bit complacent. Though they had solid line-ups and excellent coaches, they were completely exposed when they came up against top quality opposition like Holland and Germany. I feel for the likes of Kaka, Fabiano, Messi, Higuain and of course, poor Maradona 😦 I really wanted to see him get his hands of the trophy again. Alas!
kanagu: I think Argentina got exposed in QF… but for Brazil they have to blame themselves…. they played welll they are good team but lost their mind in the 2nd half of that match… 😦
By contrast, Spain and Germany were exposed early on in the tournament by the tough play of Switzerland and Serbia and lost those two matches. That made them plug the loopholes in their play and emerge much stronger when they took on strong opposition in the knock-out stages.
kanagu: I think both of them played beautiful football and deserved SFs.. but its a pity they both met in SF and Germany lost it… 😦
Uruguay had an unbelievable match against the Ghanaians. It was simply too exciting at the end. Ghana couldn’t keep their concentration and had to go out.
kanagu: True… Ghana couldn’t keep their cool… once Gyan missed his penalty it affected the whole team…
Uruguay came out fighting against the Dutch, but were beaten by a more experienced and attacking squad. Uruguay certainly missed Lugano and Suarez badly against the Netherlands.
The Spain-Germany game tonight should be exciting, a real cracker! Either team is good enough to lift the trophy, as are Holland! The final should be another exciting game.
By the way, this is the first time ever that a European team is winning the World Cup outside of Europe. And if Germany lose either today or on Sunday, then we will have a completely new name inscribed as winners on the golden trophy.
It’s sad that the tournament is coming to an end 😦 I enjoyed it thoroughly, though it had less attacking or attractive football than I would have liked.
🙂
kanagu: And Spain crowned as new champions and there is no disputes 🙂 🙂
To An alien Earthling (Nice name),
I agree with you on Maradona. For me he is the best player. Totally different class.
Any way Spain made it to finals.
I predicted Spain to win the match against Germany.
It is very difficult to say any thing on the final. Dutch is equally a good team. I think this is third final for them.
Can you imagine a small country of 16 million producing a team making to finals. In fact Dutch have very consistent record in the world cup, though they have never won.
The month long world cup is over and Spain deservedly emerged as the winner. Absolutely Andres Iniesta is the man of the match in the final.
kanagu: True 🙂
I remembered him scoring a last minute goal against Chelsea in the last years semifinals of UEFA League Championship. That is what he did again in the yesterday’s final. Other thing about him is his ability to win free kicks for his teams. Nevertheless he is an excellent player in the midfield.
Sad finish for Torres.
kanagu: Yes it’ sad… but he is coming from injury… so will take time.. 🙂 And for Iniesta he played brilliantly.. 🙂
The main difference between the two teams is in the depth of excellent players in the bench. Each time Spain replaced a player they brought a better or equally good. But the same thing can not be said about Dutch. Imagine a player like Fabregas having to sit on the bench. That is Spain is all about.
kanagu: I think Dutch played a Ugly game and deservedly didn’t won the cup… there is difference between Physical game and the one they played…
Many people might complain that they only scored 8 goals in total 7 matches, but I do not think it matters.
Being an ardent admirer of football passing game, I thoroughly enjoyed watching Spain play.
At the end, one can only feel sorry for Dutch. Three finals! No victory. But there can only be one winner.
kanagu: I am not feeling sorry for Dutch.. they deserved 2nd place and they got that….
I felt that their best chances were in 1998. That team was really good and it lost to Brazil in penalty shoot out in the semi finals. Any way, the fact that nation of only 16 million people can produce such quality team is exceptional and worthy of admiration.
kanagu: Yeah.. they always have exciting players… this time they are tough too….
Apart from the Brazil match, all your predictions were correct! Good job.
kanagu: Thank you 🙂 🙂
Actually even Brazil could have won that game. That stupid self goal, and then the panic later on was too bad.
kanagu: Their game in Second half is absolute horror… 😡
I was supporting Germany throughout however they lost to Spain 😦
kanagu: Spain played well in that game…. 🙂
Hats off to Spain though, they really played well and deserved to win this World cup. After a long time, I enjoyed the Football World Cup so thoroughly. I did not enjoy the France and Italy victories all that much in the previous world cups. They play boring football.
kanagu: True… they play a dumb football without creating much chances…. good that they left early…
Zidane’s Quest is over. 32 teams arrived in South Africa. Countless eternal moments were born. In the end, only one team was left standing – Spain, 2010 World Cup champions.
