List of best movies in Alphabetical order, My list

January 6, 2009

Sahaja has tagged me for my favorite list of movies in the alphabets. This is the toughest tag I have ever done and also a enjoyable one, thinking over it more than one week. I have forgotten many of the films I have liked. So after hitting my head(brain) here and there something came out of it. A film will be considered by me as good, only if it is not boring while watching it on second time. Here goes the list:

 A:

Anbe Sivam

Anbe Sivam: A Kamal Starred film which explained about the godly things in each human being in a simple and powerful way. Kamal also penned the story for this film.

Apoorva Sagodarargal: A Kamal Starred film, with Kamal playing 2 roles including a man of just 3-feet height. I love this film for the love of little Kamal, rollicking comedy and the songs of Illayaraja.

Avvai Shanmugi: Another Kamal starred film; with he was playing the lady role. 150 minutes of fun.

B:

Batman Begins:I love this film for its perfect blend of realism and heroism. I am also become a fan of Christian Bale after this film.

C:

City of God: A Brazilian nation film, which showed how the life in the place called City of God in Brazil. I love this film for excellent editing and uncompromising film-making. We will get shock as most of the children in this movie has real pistol in their hands and killing is their hobby.

Chak de India: Shah Rukh Khan starred inspirational film. I loved everything in this movie. I am a big fan of Shah Rukh and he is brilliant in this movie.

Cast Away: I loved it for its concept of a man living in an Island alone for more than 5 years. The scene where he sees his wife after escaping from the Island is really a touching one. Tom Hanks was marvelous in this movie.

D:

Dark Knight: No explanations are needed. Already I have written about this in this post.

Devar Magan: Kamal Starred film, which handled the egoism and problems between two families in a village. This also had Shivaji Ganesan as Kamal’s father. Nassar as villain has given a memorable performance.

E:

Ethir Neechal: A Nagesh starred movie, which explains the struggle of a helpless boy to get to top in life. It is witty, it is thoughtful, it is entertaining and overall, it is perfect. What will you expect from K.Balachandar at his peak?

E.T: A touching, fun story of an alien baby in Earth. Its lovable. The scenes in which that baby’s head was covered with blanket are really funny and cute. And the departure of the baby from the children is a very touching one.

F:

Forrest Gump: It tells you how one should approach the life. Tom Hanks at his best and I love the one liner, ‘Life is a box of chocolates and you don’t know what will you get?’ This is a magical film and some things being done by Hanks will evoke thoughts and laughter.

G:

Godfather – Part I: An epic crime film, without much blood. Everything is best in this film and I will say this is the best movie I have seen in my life time.

Gladiator: This is the first English film I have liked much. I liked the grandeur of the Roman Empire shown in this film and Russell Crowe. I have set great expectations for this film before watching it. And it fulfilled the expectations in style.

Ghilli: A Vijay Starred film, directed by Dharani. A mass-masala entertainer. It’s a remake of telugu film, Okkadu. Except for the basic story and important sequences, this film is changed a lot to good effect.

H:

I:

Indian: A Kamal Starred film, in which he portrayed two characters, including a character of a 70-year old man. It is a typical Shankar film with message and entertainment.

Indru Pooi Naalai Vaa: A Bhagyaraj Starred and directed film. It is a tale of 3 friends who all wants to win the love of girl in their vicinity. Bhagayaraj films always handles some social issues with a comic undertone. I always wonder how Mr.Bhagyaraj was able to bring up with this kind of brilliant Scripts!! But this film is only fun.

J:

K:

Kathalikka Neramillai: A classic comedy film in Tamil, with over the top performances from Nagesh and Baaliah. Directed by Sridhar, this film is still considered by many as the best film in comedy genre in tamil cinema.

Karnan: It’s a film on the mythological character Karnan of the Indian epic Mahabharata. The lead character was done by legendary Shivaji Ganesan, who made this role of his own. And the last song where Krishna getting his all good deeds, is really touching one. It’s a 150 minutes of grand experience.

L:

Lawrence of Arabia: A great film which made me to think, how that kind of cinematography is possible in 1962. This is a 3 and half hour movie, and it will fly just like that, as we immersed into this one.

M:

Mounaragam: I always consider this as the best Maniratnam film. It is about a gradual change of heart of a newly married young lady towards her husband, as they apply for divorce within a week of their marriage.

Mudhalvan: If the above one is Maniratnam’s best, this is Shankar’s best. It is a story of how a ordinary TV reporter becomes a CM of a state. An unbelievable story made believable by an intelligent script. This film is also technically brilliant.

Memento: It is an innovative and intelligent screenplay that sets this film apart from many. I have already written about this film here. Just watch this movie to know how different a director can think. I have already written about this movie here.

N:

Naayagan: A Tamil version of Godfather, directed by Maniratnam and the wonderful portrayal of Velu Naicker character by Kamal Haasan. And believe me, all the above four were pics of Kamal Haasan in that same film.

O:

Om Shanti Om: Another Shah Rukh Starred film, which I love for the love scenes in the first half and the songs.

Oram Po: A fun-filled movie from start to finish filmed on Auto racing theme. It is full of comedy with few doses of emotion. This is not a great movie. I don’t know any other film name starts with ‘O’.

P:

Platoon: It is one of the best films on war. I have already written about this here.

Pudhiya Paravai: A Shivaji Ganesan starred film, which I always consider as the best thriller in Tamil Cinema. While watching this film, I didn’t had any expectations in my mind and in the last 30 mintues there are lot of twists, which I never expected.

Q:

R:

Rocky: A Sylvester Stallone starred with a series of 6 films, is about a lesser-known boxer from a smaller town. Watch out for its energizing training theme ‘Gonna fly now’. Even though some of the parts in this series were not good, the last part is very good that made me to forget the bad parts in this series.

Raging bull: Even though I don’t like this kind of films, I am mentioning this here for its uncompromising film making and a great performance by Robert De Niro. Anybody seeing this movie will not like De Niro. That is the kind of performance he has given as a psycopath boxer Jake La Motta. This film is directed by Martin Scorcese, one of the best directors in Hollywood.

Ramana: A Vijayakanth Starred tamil  film, which a racy entertainer with a message. This is a film with great screenplay. It’s a intelligent thriller from start to finish. It is the best film the director A.R.Muragadoss.

S:

Speed: A film true to its name. I never mind watching this film for any number of times. Once this film starts, it is like starting of a vehicle, and from then onwards there is no stopping it. Keanu Reeves has got a tailor-made role for him. As a tough-cop he was brilliant.

Seven Samurai: A Japanese film directed by the great director Akira Kurosawa, which I liked very much. It is a film about the village people who seeks the help of Samurais to protect their grains from bandits. I have written about this film here.

Siraichaalai: A Tamil film, which has shown the life of two men in the jail during our struggle for freedom. Both Prabhu and Mohanlal were brilliant in this movie. If it is shown on a television, I never miss this movie.

T:

Taare Zameen Par: This film showed me how the world of children will be and what is the right way to handle them and what is the life is. This is the film I liked ver much in the recent times. Everything about this film is really good. A must watch.

Terminator 2: A sci-fi action movie can’t better than this. It is superior in visual effects and way above its time. For the first time, I have thought  Arnold’s performance is brilliant and no one can match this after seeing this movie 🙂  From the start to finish this movie is perfect. I am really sad to say that I didn’t watched this movie’s prequel and sequel 😦

Thillu Mullu: A Rajinikanth starrer, K.Balachander directed film, which will keep me in laughter whenever I watch it. One of the best performances from Rajinikanth and Thengai Srinivasan. Brilliant dialogues and I will recommend everybody to watch this.

U:

Ullathai Allitha: A Karthik starrer, another film in comedy genre, which will never forget to evoke laugh from me. The combination of Karthik and Koundmani was really brilliant.

V:

Vasool Raja M.B.B.S: A Kamal Starred film, which is actually a remake of Munnabhai M.B.B.S. The message conveyed by this film is ver strong. ‘Love all’. Some films made us to think. This film is one. Everybody has said that it is a much better movie in Hindi version. But in Tamil itself I loved it very much.

Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu: Another Kamal Starred film, directed by Gautham. A thriller which is filmed in a stylish way. The introduction scene of Kamalhaasan is ultimate and one of the best introduction any hero can get. Music by Harris Jeyaraj was awesome in this movie.

 W:

Wages of fear: A French language film, which kept me at the edge of the seats with perfectly choreographed thriller scenes. Thriller means this is not the one which will frighten you. As the two tankers carrying explosives goes on the mountain, we never know what is going to happen for the persons travelling with them.

The Way home: A Korean language film, which dealts on the relationship between a grandmother and her grandson. As her grandson come to her home in the village for the first time for summer vacation, she was doing all the things she knows to comfort him. At the end, the bond between them grew stronger, on leaving he was not able to speak a word with her.

X:

X-Men: With no other choice, I am going for this above average sci-fi action movie. It’s entertaining thats all. Nothing much can be said about this movie.

Y:

 Z:

As you could see most of the Tamil films are Kamal starred ones, which really shows that he is the one who is making some meaningful movies in Tamil cinema. His films always have class and entertainment. I love his movies. I know there are some crap movies in this list. But thats how it goes 🙂 So now its tagging time. This time I like to tag:

Odzer: As you have already said, you are watching a movie a week, I love to see your favourite genres.

Karthik: Being a regular movie-goer, I hope this will be interesting for you.

Su: I like to know about your choice of movies.

A good list 🙂 I see only movies that I feel are worthy of being seen. And the fact that I seem to have seen so many on this list makes me believe this is a good list 😛 I would like to see the French, Korean and Brazilian movies in this list. I don’t see bollywood movies, so I can’t comment on them, but I don’t think too highly of Ghilli. And hey, where are the so-called “off-beat” or “non-mainstream” Tamil movies?

    kanagu: Thanks Raj 🙂
I have been watching Tamil films from 2000 very keenly.. but I haven’t heard of anything like off-beat and independent films in Tamil 😦

  11. January 9, 2009 11:17 pm

    Kanagu,

The “off-beat” movies are those kind of (relatively) small budget Tamil movies that don’t make it that big at the box office or get wide publicity and advertising but are known for their sheer quality of acting/direction/story, etc. and win all round praise and critical acclaim. Movies like Sethu, Chennai 600028, Mozhi, Pallikoodam, Thavamai Thavamirundhu, Autograph, Pithamagan and so many others come to mind, but I haven’t seen them all 😦

kanagu: I have liked all the films you have mentioned except Autograph and Pallikoodam, as I am yet to see them. For other films in those alphabets I have already mentioned 3 films so I thought thats enough. If I start list alll of them.. then I may not finish off that tag 😀 Anyway watch those movies in your free time.. they are really good 🙂
